The Ogun State Commissioner for Forestry, Oludotun Taiwo, has affirmed that the man who was killed by an elephant in the Imobi forest in Ijebu East was in the forest to collect logs of trees that he had initially cut down.
During a phone interview with our correspondent, Oludotun noted that he had visited the community with his team, but the residents were hostile to them, so they went to the man’s family to offer condolences.
He said, “We have been to the community, but the residents were hostile to us, so we went to the man’s family to console with them.”
“Our investigation revealed that the man was engaged in illegal logging. He had gone to the forest with his children to collect logs of trees that he had previously felled.
“Since elephants usually move in groups, when the children saw them, they all ran away. The man, however, was still waiting to retrieve his knife when he was attacked. Nevertheless, we have been there to condole with the family.”
