Atiku Dumps PDP

THE Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending his membership in a party he helped establish over 20 years ago.

In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of PDP Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State, Atiku said he was leaving the party due to “irreconcilable differences” and what he described as a departure from its original values.

“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” Atiku wrote. He acknowledged the difficulty of the decision but said it had become necessary.

“As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” the letter stated. “However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”

Atiku served as Vice President from 1999 to 2007 and was the PDP’s presidential candidate in 2019 and 2023.

“Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a Presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life,” he wrote.

While the letter did not disclose his next steps, it has triggered renewed speculation about his political plans ahead of the 2027 elections.

“I wish the Party and its leadership all the best in the future. Thank you once again for the opportunities and support,” Atiku concluded.

The letter was acknowledged by Hammadama Abubakar, the ward chairman, on the same day.
