News Update
Lawmakers in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State have impeached the leader of their legislative council, Hon. Obi Sunday Nku, following several allegations of misconduct and financial mismanagement.
The impeachment was carried out on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, after a two-thirds majority of the 8th Assembly voted in favour of his removal.
The decision was supported by ten council members, including key figures such as the deputy leader, majority leader, deputy majority leader, and the chief whip.
Their resolution was directed to the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, APC state chairman, the local government chairman, and the Boki representatives in the state assembly.
The members accused Nku of running the council without involving other councillors in key decisions.
They claimed he failed to update the house on meetings with top government officials, including a recent interactive session with Governor Bassey Edet Otu in Calabar.
His alleged silence, according to them, weakened the council’s relationship with other arms of government.
The lawmakers also accused Nku of misusing funds meant for legislative work and ignoring complaints raised by the house.
Another major concern was his alleged refusal to add fellow councillors to the Cross River State “Unified Councillors Forum” online platform, which they say denied them access to important information.
They also criticised him for suspending council meetings indefinitely, even as nearby communities like Boje and Isobendeghe faced violent crises.
Following his removal, Nku is expected to return all official properties in his possession to the council.
