Ex president Buhari hospitalized

News Update

THE Former President Muhammadu Buhari is currently undergoing medical treatment in the United Kingdom.

According to Premium Times, Buhari left Nigeria in April 2025 for what was initially described as a routine health check.

However, sources close to his family say his health took a downturn after arriving in London, leading to an extended stay for treatment.

He had been placed in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) last week before being moved out, sources told Empowered Newswire.

In addition to Buhari, a close uncle and confidant of the former president, Mamman Daura, is also said to be in London receiving care.

Last month, Buhari was unable to attend the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), saying in a statement that his medical appointments in the UK kept him away.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s leader from 2015 to 2023, returned to his hometown of Daura in Katsina State after stepping down in May 2023.

Since April, he has not returned to the country, and his absence has raised questions about the state of his health and when he may come back.

During his presidency, Buhari frequently visited London for medical reasons.

His long absences at the time sparked widespread concern and public debate about Nigeria’s healthcare system.

Notable instances of his overseas treatment include multiple trips between 2016 and 2017, one of which lasted over 100 days.

Although his condition reportedly improved after leaving office, his health reportedly began to decline again earlier this year.

Details about the illness and the medical facility providing care have not been made public.

At 82, Buhari is said to be responding to treatment.

However, there has been no official statement from the Nigerian government regarding his condition.
