Federal lawmaker’s seat declared vacant

News Update

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass has declared the Ikenne/Shagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency seat in Ogun State vacant.

The announcement was made after the death of Adewunmi Onanuga, the former Deputy Chief Whip, who passed away on January 15, 2025, after a brief illness.

The Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, made the declaration on Wednesday in line with Section 68(2) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

Following this development, the Independent National Electoral Commission is expected to set a date for a bye-election to fill the vacant position.

In total, five seats are currently vacant in the House of Representatives.

Four became vacant after the deaths of sitting lawmakers, while the fifth is from Ovia South/West-Ovia North/East Federal Constituency in Edo State, where Dennis Idahosa left his seat to become the Deputy Governor of the state.
