…Launches Pharma-Grade Warehouse

In a move to tackle the widespread menace of counterfeit and substandard medicines, the Ondo State governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has commissioned a newly upgraded Pharma-grade Central Medical Store in Akure, the state capital.

The facility marks a significant milestone in the state’s fight against fake drugs and in safeguarding public health.

Speaking at the commissioning on Tuesday, Governor Aiyedatiwa reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring access to safe, quality, and affordable medicines.

He said, “Health remains a top priority of this administration, and access to safe, quality, and affordable medicines is a fundamental part of our government’s commitment to building a healthier and stronger State.”

Aiyedatiwa emphasized that the upgraded warehouse would help eliminate counterfeit and substandard drugs from public health facilities.

“It became imperative to upgrade the facility to a Pharma-grade Warehouse that adheres to international best practices for drug storage, thereby protecting the potency, safety, and quality of all health commodities,” he said.

Highlighting the threat posed by fake medicines, he added: “One of the most significant health threats in Nigeria and Africa at large is the widespread circulation of counterfeit and substandard drugs.”

He assured the public that the new facility would help block these dangerous products from entering the healthcare supply chain: “With this facility, we are taking concrete steps to eliminate fake medicines from our supply chain. We have instituted strict procurement policies to ensure that all drugs are sourced exclusively from registered and reputable pharmaceutical manufacturers and importers.”

Governor Aiyedatiwa further noted the benefits of the warehouse, including better drug handling, distribution, and reduced wastage:

“The facility would not only ensure optimal storage conditions but would also enhance inventory management, reduce wastage, and guarantee the timely and safe distribution of health commodities to hospitals and clinics across the state.”

Representing the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, Mrs. Celine Onunkwo, Coordinator of the National Product Supply Chain Management Program, described the new warehouse as a milestone toward achieving Universal Health Coverage:

“The facility is a critical milestone towards achieving Universal Health Coverage.”

She commended the governor’s proactive stance: “We commend Governor Aiyedatiwa for his commitment to healthcare development and call for sustained investment in distribution networks and warehouse maintenance to ensure long-term success.”

The event was attended by Deputy Governor Dr. Olayide Adelami, Secretary to the State Government Dr. Taiwo Fasoranti, Chief of Staff Prince Segun Omojuwa, traditional rulers, members of the State Executive Council, and top government functionaries.
