JUST IN: Amotekun saves Osun truck driver from robbery

The operatives of the Amotekun Corps in Osun State have rescued a truck driver identified simply as Jimoh, conveying iron rods to the state from Sagamu, Ogun State, after a failed attempt by armed robbers to hijack the vehicle.

This was disclosed in a statement by the spokesperson of Osun Amotekun Corps, Yusuf Idowu, on Tuesday.

Idowu explained that the vehicle conveying the rod was trailed by the robbers from Ikire around 1am on Monday, who made several attempts to stop the truck.

He said the robbers, however, succeeded in stopping the vehicle near Bisi Akande Bridge in Gbongan, where they reportedly made an attempt to snatch the wheel from the driver.

“The trailer, which was carrying forty tons of iron rods from Sagamu to Osogbo, was reportedly trailed by an unidentified Toyota Corolla vehicle from Ikire. At around 1:00 a.m., armed men attempted to intercept the truck.

“Upon reaching the Gbongan overhead bridge, he was intercepted by four armed men who approached the moving truck, posing as task force officers and demanding a waybill from the driver. The driver, noticing their suspicious behaviour, quickly realised that something was amiss.

“During the struggle, the phone of the apprentice working with the truck was forcibly taken, and several others attempted to wrest control of the wheel from the driver and collect his phone. The driver managed to push the armed men, causing them and the apprentice to fall into the nearby bush.

“Seizing the moment, he began shouting to draw the attention of people nearby and then fled into the bush. While hiding, he called his boss, who promptly informed the Corps Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Adekunle Isaac Omoyele,” the statement read.

Idowu further explained that upon receipt of the distress call, Amotekun operatives in Ayedaade Local Government responded swiftly and stormed the scene of the robbery, where they “rescued the driver and his apprentice, and secured the 40 tons of iron rods valued at N50 million.”
