Pope Francis: Serie A fixtures postponed

News Update

THE Italian Serie A matches including key fixtures involving Juventus and Lazio, have been postponed in the wake of Pope Francis’s passing at the age of 88. The Vatican confirmed his death on April 21, prompting a nationwide pause in sporting events across Italy as a mark of respect.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) announced the suspension of all football activity, echoing the country’s deep mourning. FIGC president Gabriele Gravina expressed heartfelt condolences, stating:

“Italian football shares in the profound sorrow felt by hundreds of millions around the world at the loss of His Holiness Pope Francis. He was a shining example of Christian compassion and dignity, always deeply connected to the world of sport, and especially football, which he loved dearly.

“His empathy and spiritual presence for the sick, the poor, and the persecuted served as a guiding light. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come, both within and beyond the footballing world.”

All Easter Monday fixtures have been cancelled, including Serie A matches such as Juventus vs. Parma, Genoa vs. Lazio, Torino vs. Udinese, and Cagliari vs. Fiorentina. Lower league games in Serie B and Serie C, as well as amateur competitions, have also been postponed.

This mirrors the response to the death of Pope John Paul II in 2005. No new dates have been confirmed for the rescheduled fixtures. Most Serie A clubs have five games remaining in the current season.
