A Customary Court in Kaduna has officially dissolved the six-year marriage between 37-year-old businesswoman, Hannah, and her husband, Caleb Williams, over allegations of domestic violence and threats to life.
The presiding judge, Dauda John, ruled that the marriage had “irretrievably broken down” and emphasized that no one should be compelled to remain in a toxic relationship. The court granted full custody of the couple’s 5-year-old son to Hannah and ordered Caleb to refund the N50,000 dowry he had paid.
Hannah had earlier told the court that her husband had repeatedly assaulted her, especially after the loss of their second child three years ago. She detailed several near-death experiences, stating that she lived in constant fear and described her marriage as a “prison.”
Despite Caleb denying the abuse and accusing his wife of being stubborn, he agreed to the divorce, stating that all his efforts for reconciliation had been rejected.
Judge Dauda John’s final ruling prioritized Hannah’s mental health and safety, stressing the importance of emotional well-being in any union.
