Flash: Popular Minister Sacked Over Rising Crime

News Update

Peru’s Interior Minister, Juan Jose Santivanez, was removed from office on Friday after failing to address the growing violence in the country.

The decision came after Congress voted 79 to 11 in favour of his dismissal, with 20 lawmakers abstaining.

The rising crime wave had sparked outrage, especially after the recent murder of Paul Flores, a well-known cumbia singer, who was shot by hitmen targeting his tour bus outside Lima.

Flores and his band, Armonia 10, had reportedly been threatened by a criminal gang demanding payment for protection.

His death intensified public frustration over extortion and violence.

Following the vote, hundreds of protesters marched to the Peruvian Congress, urging the government to take stricter measures against organized crime.

Among the protesters was Celinda Armas, a grieving mother whose son was killed over a stolen phone.

Another participant, Alan Meriche, joined the march to demand an end to violence affecting musicians and everyday citizens alike.

So far this year, 459 homicides linked to crime have been recorded in Peru—the highest number in two decades.

In response to the worsening situation, the government declared a month-long state of emergency in Lima to allow soldiers to assist the police in fighting organized crime.

The threat of gang violence has become widespread in Peru, with criminal groups extorting money from bus drivers, shop owners, and even teachers.

Some of these gangs, like the notorious Tren de Aragua, have links to Venezuela and operate across Latin America.

Following the minister’s removal, President Dina Boluarte has 72 hours to appoint a replacement, as the country grapples with mounting pressure to restore public safety and curb violent crime.
