Jonathan Breaks Silence On Fubara’s Suspension

News Update

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has strongly criticized the suspension of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other elected officials, warning that such political instability harms Nigeria’s international reputation.

Speaking at the Haske Satumari Foundation Colloquium in Abuja, Jonathan expressed concern over the crisis in Rivers State.

He stated that the actions of government leaders, both in the executive and legislative branches, are painting the country in a negative light.

On the same day, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) declared its support for President Bola Tinubu’s decision to impose a state of emergency in Rivers State.

NNPP National Chairman, Dr. Agbo Major, defended the move, stating that the president, as Nigeria’s Chief Security Officer, had access to intelligence justifying the decision.

“The situation in Rivers was worsening, and no one can predict how much worse it could have become without intervention,” Major told reporters.

He also criticized some political leaders for failing to act sooner, allowing tensions to escalate before stepping in.

Jonathan, who rarely comments on political matters, said he was compelled to speak out due to growing concerns from Nigerians.

He stressed that Nigeria’s ability to attract investment depends on the integrity of its government institutions, including the executive, legislature, and judiciary.

He warned against judicial interference, stating, “When individuals can control the judiciary, public trust in the system is lost.”
