UNIZIK Female Student Expelled For Assaulting Lecturer in Viral Video

News Update

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU) has expelled a third-year student, Goddy-Mbakwe Chimamaka Precious, from the Department of History and International Studies following an altercation with a lecturer that escalated into physical violence. The decision was confirmed in an official statement issued on Friday by the Acting Registrar, Victor Modebelu.

The incident, which unfolded earlier this week, involved Chimamaka and Dr. Chukwudi Michael Okoye, a lecturer from the Department of Theatre and Film Studies. The conflict was captured in a viral video, which shows the student dancing and recording a TikTok video in a university corridor. Dr. Okoye, walking past the student, tapped her on the shoulder to ask her to move out of the way, but the student reportedly became upset by the interruption.

According to a statement from the university, Chimamaka’s reaction quickly escalated when she began insulting Dr. Okoye, prompting him to return and address the situation. The lecturer demanded that the student delete the video, which had inadvertently captured him. However, the confrontation turned physical when Chimamaka grabbed Dr. Okoye’s clothes, and in the ensuing struggle, allegedly bit him multiple times, tore his clothes, and scratched his face.

In the wake of the altercation, Dr. Okoye shared his account of the incident on social media, claiming that after overhearing the insults, he returned to verify whether Chimamaka was one of his students. He detailed that the situation worsened when he attempted to have her delete the video and was met with violent resistance.

Following an investigation, the university’s Student Disciplinary Committee found Chimamaka guilty of “gross misconduct” and a breach of the institution’s disciplinary regulations. Regulation 4 of the Students Disciplinary Regulations, which governs student behavior, was cited in the expulsion notice.

The university’s Acting Vice-Chancellor has approved the recommendation for expulsion, with the student required to vacate the campus immediately and return any university property in her possession.
