BREAKING: Yobe partners Morocco to develop local govt

The Yobe State Government has taken a significant step toward strengthening local governance by partnering with the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa.

A delegation led by Secretary to the State Government, Baba Malam Wali, Mni, met with UCLGA officials in Rabat, Morocco, on Monday, February 10, to discuss funding and development initiatives for local councils in the state.

According to Mamman Mohammed, Director General of Press and Media Affairs, the delegation engaged with UCLGA Secretary General, Jean Piere Elong Mbassi, to explore funding avenues for local projects.

Mbassi outlined that funding would be sourced through the African Forum for Decentralised Cooperation.

He explained, “The projects would be funded with 60% from FACDI, 20% from the Moroccan government, and 10% from the benefiting local governments in kind, including land.”

He also highlighted opportunities for local governments to access the Green Climate Fund to tackle pressing environmental challenges such as climate change, desert encroachment, and flooding.

“There are windows of opportunity for local governments to benefit from and effectively address these challenges,” he noted.

Baba Malam Wali described the discussions as highly productive, emphasizing the state government’s commitment to fast-tracking the registration process to access the funds.

He added, “The government also plans to explore capacity-building opportunities for local government staff, particularly through the College of Administration, Management and Technology (CAMTEC) in Potiskum.”

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ibrahim Adamu Jajere, reiterated the Buni administration’s dedication to transforming local government administration in the state.

“This partnership will enable local government councils to be proactive in administration and development,” he stated.

Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Muhammad Bello Kawuwa, urged UCLGA to adopt a “train-the-trainer” model to ensure broader capacity-building across the state.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Damaturu Local Government Council and ALGON Chairman, Bukar Adamu, assured that all 17 local government councils in Yobe are ready to register and fully participate in the initiative.
