APC Expels Popular Ex- Governor From Party

News Update

THE All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun state has expelled Rauf Aregbesola, the former minister of interior, over alleged anti-party activities.

The leadership of APC in Osun announced Aregbesola’s expulsion from the party in a letter titled, ‘Allegations of anti-party activities—conveyance of state exco decision to you’.

The letter sighted by TheCable was dated January 7, 2025.

Aregbesola was also the governor of Osun from 2010 to 2018 on the platform of the APC.

He was the minister during the regime of former President Muhammadu Buhari between 2015 and 2023.

On Sunday, the Omoluabi Progressives, the political group of Aregbesola, announced its decision to quit the APC.

The group took the decision during a stakeholders’ meeting attended by Aregbesola and other members of the APC faction in the 332 wards of Osun.

At the meeting, Aregbesola said it was time to work “aggressively” to entrench good governance in Osun.

The former minister said the efforts to position the group for the task ahead would soon materialise.

“The path we have toed is a smooth path, highly reassuring and full of good tides that will propel our dear state to greatness,” Aregbesola said.

Abosede Oluwaseun, spokesperson of the group, said members resolved to quit APC because of “ostracisation from the party, suspension and expulsion of leaders without fair hearing, and continuous denigration of the structure”.

Oluwaseun said members of the group were ready to join another political party ahead of the 2026 Osun governorship election.

THE LETTER

In the letter, the party’s leadership accused Aregbesola of violating Article 21 of the APC constitution, which outlines disciplinary measures for members.

The leadership alleged that Aregbesola’s actions had undermined the unity and integrity of the party, warning him against identifying as a member or acting on behalf of APC in any capacity.

“We write to formally bring to your attention the findings and resolution arising from the disciplinary process initiated concerning allegations of anti-party activities levelled against you by the Disciplinary Committee, where you were allowed to be heard by the principles of natural justice,” the letter reads.

“At the end of the investigation, the State Executive Committee (SEC) considered the report of the Disciplinary Committee.

“Having carefully considered the findings and recommendations of the committee, SEC has resolved to accept the recommendation of your immediate expulsion from the All Progressives Congress, APC.

“The decision was predicated on the clear evidence of your actions, which undermined the unity and integrity of the Party in violation of the provisions of Article 21 of the APC Constitution guiding the conduct and discipline of members.

“As a result, with the approval of your expulsion, you cease to be a member of APC. Consequently, you are not to hold yourself out as a member or act in any capacity on behalf of the Party in any manner whatsoever.

“While acknowledging your past contributions to the Party, we trust that you will comply with this decision and act according to the directives in this communication.”
