No fewer than 164 people were apprehended on Saturday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, for flouting the state’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise.
According to the State Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, the violators will be prosecuted for their offences in court.
Among those apprehended, one individual was handed over to the police for attacking a sanitation officer during the exercise.
Despite the violations, Hajia Buge commended the majority of Ilorin residents for adhering to the sanitation guidelines, praising their cooperation in fostering a cleaner environment.
She also lauded Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq for his unwavering support and provision of facilities to combat indiscriminate waste disposal.
Speaking during the monitoring exercise, the commissioner highlighted Kwara State’s recognition for its proactive efforts in sustaining a clean and disease-free environment.
She attributed the increased number of violations to a recent adjustment in the sanitation schedule during the festive period, which permitted human and vehicular movement.
Hajia Buge warned residents to desist from violating the state’s environmental laws, stressing that offenders would face the full weight of the law.
She further called on citizens to partner with the government in its mission to achieve a cleaner and greener Kwara.
