Jubilation As Teachers, Others Receive Higher New Minimum Wage

New update

THE Rivers State government has begun implementing the N85,000 minimum wage it recently approved for its workers.

It was gathered that some public school teachers and some other workers in the state were jubilant as they received their November salary alert and realised that the new minimum wage had been implemented.

Recall that President Bola Tinubu in July this year approved N70,000 nationally as the new minimum wage following pressures by the Nigeria Labour unions as a way to mitigate the current economic woes.

But Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State approved N85,000 as the new minimum wage for the state workers with assurance that the state will pay it through its Internally Generated Revenue. IGR.

The governor had announced a whopping increase of the state IGR from N11b by the previous administration to N27 billion under his administration.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Civil Service Union, Rivers State chapter, Chukwuma Osunna, confirmed the payment of the new salary structure in an interview with The Guardian.

He said, “The Governor has fulfilled his promise. As of today, November 27, 2024, I can confirm that he has paid the N85,000 new minimum wage to workers and the workers are happy.

“We met under the joint council, sat with the Head of Service, saw the salary chart and confirmed that the N85,000 is well calculated and implemented in the November salary of workers, so, payment started today and by tomorrow, other banks will start to pay too.”

Osunna promised that they were ready to sacrifice anything for the current administration.

Some workers in the state in an interview expressed joy about the new wage implementation, saying it will boost their morale to work.

John Amayofoi with the State Ministry of Information, said, “This is what government should be, keeping to promises, not the political promises we have seen in the past”

Also, Mrs Angela Nkem who works with the Ministry of Tourism, said, the goodwill will go a long way to cushion the current economic woes.

Meanwhile, online videos showed some public school teachers dancing and jubilating after receiving the increased wage in their November salaries.

A teacher said, “The era has gone that teachers will use a ruler to measure yam”.
