Ondo govt vows to end gender-based violence

News Update

THE Ondo State government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights of the girl-child and women across the state.

The Special Adviser to the State Governor on Gender Matters, Chief (Mrs) Olamide Falana, made this pledge in a statement personally signed by her in commemoration of “The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.”

She highlighted that the state government has consistently promoted policies and programmes aimed at raising public awareness about the negative impact of violence and abuse on women and girls, with a view to mitigating its effects.

“Ondo State is proud to join advocates globally in this critical campaign of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, themed: UNITE – Invest to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls,” she stated.

“This awareness campaign, which begins today, 25th November 2024, will run until 10th December 2024.”

“With regard to investment in women and the girl-child, the state has in recent years prioritised efforts to fight gender-based violence, protect victims, and educate the public on its harmful effects on society at large,” she continued.

“The Aiyedatiwa-led administration, through the Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Matters, has implemented policies and collaborated with various organisations to provide young girls with a sense of belonging. The government is committed to doing even more to ensure their mental and physical well-being.”

“It is no exaggeration to say that the Ondo State government has a ‘Zero Tolerance’ policy towards gender-based violence. To this end, the government has established the Agency Against Gender-Based Violence, which coordinates the state’s response to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). Women and girls are assured of security and access to legal services, while an effective VAPP Law ensures offenders are held accountable.”

Chief Falana also noted the state’s recent achievements, saying: “As part of our progress report, the recently concluded gubernatorial election recorded zero cases of violence against women. This positive and commendable outcome reflects the effectiveness of the systems in place under Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration.”

“While the efforts of the state government are impressive, there is still work to be done. This campaign should not be seen as a mere formality but as a genuine effort to inspire lasting change and foster a renewed societal mindset,” she added.

The Special Adviser urged stakeholders to recognise the critical roles girls and women play in societal development, emphasising that the Agency Against Gender-Based Violence remains active in ensuring justice and support for victims.

She encouraged those affected to speak out, advising them to use the toll-free helpline (08001001010) to report cases for prompt action.

“Let us, in our respective capacities, promote the message of saying NO to gender-based violence and related vices while working towards a safer and more inclusive society for all,” she stressed.
