World Fisheries Day: Ekiti Association Gifts Over 200 Fish to Special Schools

News Update

In a heartwarming celebration of World Fisheries Day, the Fisheries and Aquaculture Farmers Association of Ekiti State, in collaboration with the Fisheries Society of Nigeria (FISON) and the Federal Department of Fisheries, marked the occasion by donating over 200 fish to special schools across the state. The event was led by esteemed members of the Ekiti fisheries community, including Prof. Olawunmi Fapohunda and Dr. Ebenezer Adebayo, who emphasized the importance of giving back to society during this global celebration.

World Fisheries Day, observed annually on November 21st, aims to raise awareness about the significance of preserving fish stocks and promoting sustainable fishing practices. Dr. Adebayo noted that while this day is recognized worldwide, the initiative in Ekiti State is part of a broader movement being undertaken across various states in Nigeria.

The generous donation was enthusiastically received by Princess Adetoun Agboola, the Special Adviser on Special Education and Social Inclusion, who highlighted the critical role the association plays in ensuring protein sustainability for both children and adults. She praised the initiative as an effective means to heighten awareness about the valuable work being done to support individuals with special needs.

Additionally, she expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Ekiti State Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji for his unwavering commitment to improving the lives of those in special schools, particularly through his recent approval of 74 support staff, including 40 specialist teachers in vocational subjects such as Physical and Health Education, Fine Arts, Music, Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Yoruba language, Agriculture Science, and core science subjects.

Princess Agboola, who accepted the fish donation on behalf of the schools, shared inspiring stories of students benefiting from therapeutic interventions. She underscored the positive impact that dedicated therapists have on helping children with special needs reach their full potential, stating, “What you are doing today aligns perfectly with the governor’s vision…we are very fortunate and grateful to you for considering these children.”

The donation event brought together principals from the three special schools in the state, fostering a spirit of community and collaboration. Through this remarkable initiative, the Fisheries Association not only addressed the nutritional needs of the students but also ignited a vital conversation about the treatment and inclusion of individuals with disabilities in society.

As the day concluded, attendees commended the collective efforts of the Fisheries Association and the state government in supporting those who are often marginalized. This event serves as a poignant reminder of the potential for community-driven initiatives to create meaningful change and uplift the lives of vulnerable individuals.
