JUST IN: Cross River assigns 36 motorcycles, Hilux vehicles for cholera, TB monitoring

As part of efforts to curb the menace of cholera and tuberculosis in Cross River State, the state government has deployed 36 motorcycles into the hinterlands to monitor health developments.

In recognition of the state government’s efforts, international health partners have donated brand new Hilux vehicles to bolster these activities.

The Commissioner of Health in the state, Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk, confirmed this, disclosing that the vehicles have also been deployed towards TB and cholera activities in the state.

Briefing journalists in his office on his ministry’s activities over the past year, the commissioner said, “As of today, we have been able to stem the spread of tuberculosis and cholera in the state.

“To support the field staff and their assistants, we have deployed the 36 motorcycles to some primary healthcare centers (PHCs) to aid their mobility.

“These were donated by the World Health Organization (WHO), and we have received robust support from other health partners, for which we are very grateful.”

He disclosed that they have refurbished 196 PHCs, assuring that by the end of the year that number will be doubled.

“I can boldly affirm that there have been zero cases of cholera in the state during the recent national outbreak.

“This is due to the robust relationships and support we have enjoyed from stakeholders and health partners.

“The state TB program received 36 motorcycles for the 18 LGAs. We are still waiting for the arrival of digital X-ray machines to aid TB diagnosis in our secondary health facilities.

“We will further revitalize another 196 PHC facilities to make a total of 392, having secured World Bank assistance.”
