The common mantra of “it is well” among many people in Nigeria of today is more of deceit than reality.
The rationale behind my conviction is that things are not well despite the fact that the mantra has almost become a special anthem.
In all honesty, nothing is well with many people that are claiming “it is well” in many occasions and situations.
In recent times, with the way things are going in the country, those mantras such as it is well, God help us, by God’s grace, may God help us, God is alive, God knows, God is able etc are becoming mere slangs to end a discussion.
In most cases , those slangs are now a response to inefficiency, iniquities and corruption.
Of course, I am not limiting God , but at the same time relying on God on what we are capable of doing is more of delusion than reality.
When there are cases of kidnapping in the country, the poor man would say ” it is well” and when the food items are expensive in the market, poor men will say ” God have mercy” , the poor are dying of hunger, we all say “may God have mercy” you ask road side mechanic if he can fix your car very well, he would say ” by God’s grace” at the end , he added another problem to the car due to his inefficiency despite claiming he can do it by God’s grace.
Instead of taking the right action that can solve problems, we continue to say ” It is well” may God have mercy ( K’Olohun saanu)
Has God not been having mercy before?
The belief that Nigeria will be better as that story of a city called Samaria in the bible is at the verge of serious doubt considering the hopeless situation of our dear nation.
For several years past now, we have inherited the saying that one day Nigeria will be better and we keep on saying it even when there is no any progressive signal to prove our claims.
We are optimistic even though there is no positive actions on ground to justify the realization of a better country in the future.
Election is at the corner, the credible candidates without money will not win because money has become answers to winning an election in our dear nation. Those that are supposed to go out and vote will remain indoor watching television, monitoring votes on screen claiming “it is well , God is able”
Insecurities, unemployment, inefficiency, robbery, inflation, low level of technology, delusions etc are really in abundant supply , yet we depend on God to do the wonders. Alas, God may disappoint while we continue singing it is well.
Dying dreamers are here that keep on reaping the woes of the past.
As Ogidiolu Afrocentric succinctly puts it in one of his tracks,
“The shining stars are falling untimely” , the songs of it is well has become a popular rendition where nothing seems well. The raging questions are;
“Will there be light ?
Will there be smiles?
Will the children see sun in the sky?
Will there be freedom?
Will tomorrow come, with pleasant change and not in chains again”?
