An unidentified person has set a mosque ablaze in Laraba Abasawa community in Gezawa local government area of Kano State during the early hours of Wednesday.
The incident, which occurred during the early morning ‘Subh’ prayer, resulted in injuries to some worshippers.
According to reports, the assailant, whose identity remained unknown at press time, carried out the attack using petrol to ignite the fire while worshippers were engaged in their morning prayers.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the arsonist locked the door of the mosque after setting it ablaze, trapping worshippers inside and exacerbating the severity of the situation.
One of the eyewitnesses, who spoke to Daily Trust, recounted the chaotic scene, stating, “It took time for people outside to become aware of the incident and rescue the victims who were struggling to break out of the burning building.”
The aftermath of the attack saw at least 20 worshippers sustaining injuries, prompting an urgent response from emergency services. The injured were promptly transported to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano where they are currently receiving medical attention.
The Kano State Police Command was yet to comment on the incident.
