Jeff Bezos beats Elon Musk to reclaim world’s richest person title

THE executive officer (CEO) of Amazon has become the world’s richest man, with his net worth hitting the $200 billion mark.

Bezos dethroned Elon Musk, the billionaire founder of Tesla Inc., on Monday, following an 18 percent surge in Amazon’s share price.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Jeff Bezos currently has a net worth of $200 billion, while Musk’s net worth stands at $198 billion.

Elon lost $17.6 billion of his wealth in a single day after Tesla shares tumbled 7.2 percent on Monday.

The Amazon boss has seen its shares surge 18 percent year-to-date and nearly 90 percent in the last year.

On the other hand, Tesla shares have fallen 24 percent year-to-date.

Meanwhile, Bernard Arnault is the world’s third-richest person with a total wealth of $197 billion.

The title of the world’s richest person changes every few months, depending on markets performance.

In January 2021, Musk claimed the title, overtaking Jeff Bezos following a 4.8 percent surge in Tesla’s share price at the time.

Musk had also reclaimed the title in May 2023, edging out Bernard Arnault, a French businessman and CEO of Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy (LVMH).

The three billionaires — Bezos, Musk, and Bezos — have been in competition with each other for the top spot.

According to Bloomberg’s index, these are currently the world’s richest people:

Jeff Bezos-$200 Billion
Elon Musk-$198 Billion
Bernard Arnault-$197 Billion
Mark Zuckerberg-$179 Billion
Bill Gates-$150 Billion
Steve Ballmer-$143 Billion
Warren Buffett-$133 Billion
Larry Ellison-$129 Billion
