THE Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke has approved the reabsorption of the 23 Special Needs Teachers who were part of the 1,500 teachers laid off as a result of irregular recruitment.
The Permanent Secretary, Osun State Ministry of Education, Mr Murtala Jimoh disclosed this while addressing principals of secondary schools at a seminar organized for them on war against drug abuse.
Speaking further at the programme put together by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the Ministry of Education, Mr Jimoh said the reabsorbed teachers are to teach in the 10 Special Needs Schools across the State.
While explaining that the state government is aware of the shortage of teachers in public schools, the Permanent Secretary said steps are being taken to fill the existing vacancies.
Speaking on drug abuse among students, Mr. Jimoh admonished the principals to ensure that they disseminate what is learnt to the students as they are the most vulnerable to drug abuse.
He added that all stakeholders in the education sector must work together to stem the tide of drug abuse among students.
In her address, the Deputy Commander General of Narcotics, NDLEA, Mrs. Awogbeyi Titus Joyce said school principals should be weary of the kind of food vendors they allow into their schools as these school vendors sometimes aid in the sales of drugs.
In his lecture, the Deputy commander, NDLEA Osun State, Mr. Friday Oluwi said adequate measures should be put in place to eliminate drug abuse in schools.
He further advised principals to ensure that there is a functional drug free club in schools and also assign a desk coordinator for the war against drug abuse in schools.
