To save Osun State from environmental degradation, governor Ademola Adeleke has approved the planting of one hundred thousand seedling of trees across the state.
Commissioner for environment and sanitation, Hon Mayowa Adejoorin stated this on IMOLE AYO, a sensitization programme on OSBC Radio and Television channels.
The programme is put in place by the office of the spokesperson to the governor to promote the activities of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration.
Hon Adejoorin noted that the governor knows the benefits of trees in the society as the only source of oxygen that man derives to live, saying if there is no trees, life will seize on earth.
He also commended the governor for taking proactive steps to prevent flooding of unimaginable magnitude in Osun state as predicted by the Nigeria Metrological Agency NIMET, which listed Osun among other states of the federation to witness flooding this year.
Hon Adejoorin explained that, if the government had not taken proactive measures, the devastating effects of flooding recorded in parts of Osun State would have been enormous.
According to the Commissioner for environment and sanitation, as part of its erosion and flood control, the present administration in Osun State has continued to embark on dredging of streams, rivers and waterways to ensure free flow of water.
Hon Adejoorin pointed out that, the government through the ministry of environment and sanitation as well as ministry of works has begun clearing of overgrown bushes on road median and road verges across the state in order to prevent auto accidents.
He however appealed to the people to desist from dumping of refuse into waterways when it is raining saying this could aggravate avoidable disaster.
