Fresh update emerges on Students affected by Osun police teargas

THE Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Dr Adelani Aderinola has spoken on the incident that affected over 21 students of Fakunle Unity Comprehensive High School, Osogbo.

In an interview with the newsmen on Wednesday in Osogbo, Aderinola affirmed that the students are back home and healthy as at Tuesday evening after the incident occurred.

VAM reported that on Monday, police attached to Mobile Police Force 39 Squadron, during their drilling activities, fired a teargas which affected the students of the school located opposite the police station.

21 students were affected and rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment. They were discharged as at the evening.

SP Yemisi Opalola, Police Spokesperson, explained to newsmen that the incident was a result of teargas fired by the officers during their morning exercise.

“The incident occurred as a result of the morning drill exercises observed by the Mobile police 39 squadron.

The situation is under control on as the students were immediately rushed to Living Spring and Osun State Teaching Hospital in Osogbo”

” The commissioner of police, CP Patrick Longe also made visit to the students at the hospital to check on their welfare”, she explained.

Reacting to the incident, a parent, Engr. Ademola Ekundayo, advised the government to relocate the police unit from the city centre as residents of the area were also falling victims as a result of reoccurrence of such incidents.

” This incident has been occurring for sometime now, and its because students are affected this time, that it went viral, several complaints have been made to the Unit, the Government should relocate the police base to another place, or the Mobile police should not have their teargas drilling activities during school hours and move it to weekends”.

“what if there was an asthma patient among them, preventive measures should be taken so as to prevent another incident from happening again”, he concluded .
