Obasanjo: I never asked for third term, if I wanted one, I would have got it

THE NEWS YOU NEED

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said he would have secured a third term as Nigeria’s president if he had wanted.

Obasanjo said he was audacious enough to know how to secure a third term in office.

Speaking at a virtual meeting organised by Africa Leadership Group, the former president said, “I never asked for a third term. If I wanted a third term, I would have got it. I am audacious enough to know how to get it.”

Stressing that he never wanted to be Nigeria’s president, Obasanjo said no constitution was perfect, adding that the 1999 constitution should be amended.

He disclosed that devolution of power should be included in the amended constitution.

“Some people blame the constitution for everything in Nigeria. Of course, our constitution is not perfect, and there is no constitution that is sacrosanct and can’t be amended.”
