2023: God will never give power to the wicked, Wike fires Okowa

Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers, has responded to a comment by Ifeanyi Okowa, his Delta counterpart, on the crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

On Friday, Okowa, the PDP vice-presidential candidate, said the party will win the presidential election with or without the support of the ‘G5’.

The G5 governors include Wike and his allies, who have asked Iyorchia Ayu to step down as PDP national chairman as a condition for supporting the party’s presidential campaign.

“It is only the power of God that can help us to win. So, whether the G5 said that they would work with APC or any other party, we will win,” Okowa had said at the PDP rally in Delta.

Speaking on Saturday during the flag-off of the construction of the Ogbo-Ihugbodo road in Ahoada east LGA, Wike said those behind that statement should understand that God doesn’t give power to the “wicked and treacherous”.

“Don’t be treacherous in life because you want power. God will never give power to the wicked. Our hands are clean; we have not done anything wrong,” the Rivers governor said.

“All we are saying is, do things in a way all of us will have a sense of belonging; that all of us will believe that we are together. That is all we are saying. If saying so is wrong, then let it be to God. But we know that it is good as right takes, let left take also.

“We are alive today; we are where we are because of God. Nobody can even breathe air if not God, not to talk of holding position. So, nobody can tell us that it is only God. We know that it is only God that gives power.

“But our prayer is that ‘God, don’t allow those who will sell off Nigeria to be in power’. Our prayer is ‘God, don’t allow anybody that people will have an agreement with, and in the next two minutes, the person will change’.

“Our prayer is that almighty God will not allow those who will betray their brothers when they have agreed with their brothers to do something. God, may you never allow such people.”

The calls for Ayu’s resignation had been followed by the creation of the G5, later dubbed the ‘Integrity Group’, which includes Wike and his allies.

In recent days, there were speculations that the five PDP governors — Wike, Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Samuel Ortom (Benue) — have endorsed Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

But Wike and Tinubu have dismissed the speculations.
