Science Technology Daily reports that on October 15 China launched its first electric riverboat for cold climates on a tributary of the Songhua River in northeast China.
The vessel, which is intended for small-scale river cruises, has a gross tonnage of 138 tonnes and can accommodate 53 passengers.
It has four groups of lithium iron phosphate batteries, each with a maximum capacity of 600 kilowatt hours (kWh), allowing it to run for eight hours without recharging. It is around 27 meters long and six meters wide.
The riverboat, known as “Ling Hang Zhi Xing,” or star of navigation, is propelled by two 60 kW permanent magnet synchronous motors. It is intended to move in deep still water at a speed of 12 kilometers per hour (km/h), with a trial speed limit of 18 km/h.
This intelligent, zero-emission ship is built to operate in sub-zero temperatures at high latitude cold regions, offering an alternative mode of transportation on inland waterways. Low temperatures have a severe impact on the performance of the battery and charging equipment.
Along with other innovations, the ship design is a result of a co-education project involving Heilongjiang Shipping Group, Harbin Engineering University, and Harbin Electric Corporation.
