My Village People (2021): Movie Review

Plot: “My Village People” is a dark comedy movie that tells relatable African folklore. It follows the tale of a prince, who finds himself in a bizarre love triangle with the marine world and a coven of witches as a result of his reckless lifestyle.

Review: The story revolves around Prince (Bovi Ugboma), a well-off middle-aged man whose life dramatically changes as he returns to his village for his sister’s wedding.

His confrontation with the villagers he has been repeatedly warned about determines the plot and mood of this darkly humorous movie.

The narrative begins in the village with a hint of conventional humor before launching into a flurry of dark humor and otherworldly manifestations as it travels from the village to Lagos and then returns to the town.

Through witches and marine spirits, the film drew us into both physical and metaphysical confrontations with malevolent forces.

When bad things happen, we all refer to these entities and forces as “village people.”

In the movie, there are some amusing and well-acted situations when the Pastors who connive at individuals who are looking for solutions to their issues get their just desserts.

FLOP: The dialogue between characters is frequently clumsy and lacks the zing needed to ignite the film’s convoluted and enigmatic story.

However, since it is more of a comedy, some of those loopholes could be pardoned by us.

NOTE: Aside from being a comedy film with some scary parts, My Village People might have been more intriguing if the writers had been able to break down the various “village people” components.
