Rise (2022): Movie Review

Plot: Based on the real life story about the family that produced the first trio of brothers to become NBA champions in the history of the league.

Review: Sports-themed films have long captured Disney’s attention. Their titles cover several decades and focus on different sports and infamous people.

The story of the NBA player’s brothers, Thanasis and Kostas Antetokounmpo, is told in “Rise.”

The movie depicts the brothers, who are of Greek descent and Nigerian descent, in their youth.

They overcame their circumstances and difficulties to become sports phenoms and well-known figures thanks to the grit, faith, tenacity, and work ethic of their family. As Giannis and Thanasis, respectively, real-life brothers Uche and Ral Agada are used instead.

The narrative of the Antetokounmpo brothers begins in 1990 in Lagos, Nigeria. Charles and Vera Antetokounmpo (Dayo Okeniyi and Yetide Badaki), the parents of the children, make the difficult decision to leave their native Nigeria for Greece, leaving their firstborn infant son behind with family.

Akin Omotoso, an award-winning Nigerian filmmaker, does not attempt to downplay the bigotry, xenophobia, humiliation, or anything else that Charles and Vera experience as they travel from Lagos to Istanbul and ultimately Athens. However, he never lingers on these troubling aspects of the story.

The movie focuses on events such as Giannis’ birth in 1994 and a crucial occasion in the park when he first became interested in basketball.

In one of the movie’s last scenes, a Nike representative asks Giannis to explain what makes him different from the other young men competing for a shot at greatness. He tells a tale about sleeping on the gym floor, hiding from the cops, and swapping gym shoes with his older brother. The situation is so wonderful and emotional.

The cinematography, Casting and performances were excellent

HITS: As newcomers, the Agada brothers did a good job

FLOPS: The movie had a slow start, and one could second guess how it’s all going to end.
