Police react to strike action as DIG says salary increment is irreversible

The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, DIG Babatunde Johnson Kokumo, mni told the Osun Policemen and women at the Osun State Police Command that the salary increment promised by President Muhammadu Buhari is irreversible.

Kokumo made the statement when he was on a courtesy and official tour to the Osun Police Command under his supervision on Wednesday, March 23, 2022.
He said the payment of 20% salary increment has reached an advanced stage and very shortly the police will begin to smile to their banks to collect their entitlements.

He said the delay in payment was as a result of computation across the states of the Federation that takes a longer time.

“Paying the money involves a procedure, inter Ministerial meetings, it involves the Ministry of Finance, the Police Affairs Ministry and of course the Salaries and Wages Department.
We must follow due process, we must follow due diligence. And if there is any delay, the delay is as a result of the fact that computations had to be made. Papers have to be moved from one ministry to the other.

You can begin to imagine percentage increase in salary of individuals of Nigerian Police Officer, doing that alone for Osun State is herculian and you do that across 36 states.
So the increase announced by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, I say it again, is irreversible.”

DIG Kokumo said the Police should not allow themselves to be used by disgruntled elements in the society.

“Don’t allow disgruntled elements to lure you into illegal actions. Don’t be part of any threatened action, it is an empty threat and don’t allow those behind it to lure you into it because they will back out.

Don’t be surprised that they may not even be Police officers.
They may want to create troubles, crisis unnecessarily. Don’t allow yourself to be used

You have made a lot of sacrifices in this job. You have worked consciously in the last few years and Mr President in his wisdom has chosen to compensate our efforts by announcing the salary increase.

Why don’t you exercise patience to receive this salary increase with the arrears involved?

Any strike action by any Policeman amounts to mutiny and we all know the consequences of mutiny.
It is therefore my strong advice, I will admonish you to stay completely clear from any acts that is mutinous.

Go about your lawful duties with diligence.”
After the address of DIG Kokumo, the Osun Police chorused that they will not be part of the planned strike action by some sections of the Police Force. CONTINUE READING….
