‘For Lai Mohammed, Every Day Is Another Opportunity To Tell A New Lie’ – Kwara State House Of Assembly

Members of the Kwara State House of Assembly have lambasted the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, for saying he sponsored their campaign, calling him a ‘liar who lies every day.”

The 24 members noted this in a statement they jointly signed on Sunday, titled, ‘For Lai Mohammed, every day is another opportunity to tell a new lie.’

Mohammed had, while inaugurating the factional secretariat of the All Progressives Congress on Saturday, accused the Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, of biting the fingers that fed him, citing how he [Mohammed] sponsored, single-handed, the governor’s election in 2019.

“By the grace of God, I single-handedly, with the support of friends, politicians and families, raised all the money for all the elections we had in Kwara during that period, starting from the by-election that brought in honourable Raheem Olawuyi (Ajuloopin) as Rep member.

“I challenge anybody here to say who gave the party one penny apart from what I gave them. The money paid to party agents and leaders to mobilise voters was raised by me. I challenge anybody here to say that he gave logistic support to the party, I did it by the grace of God. I distributed 500 motorcycles, 20 vehicles and many of the beneficiaries are here,’’ Mohammed had said.

In their reaction, however, the 24 lawmakers in the Kwara Assembly described the minister as a liar, adding that he never sponsored any of them.

The lawmakers said they would have ignored the allegation as another lie from the minister but that the record needed to be set straight in order to disabuse the minds of unsuspecting members of the public and posterity.

They said Mohammed did not give any support in any form to members of the ninth legislature during the campaign and election; if he did, he should name who and what he gave out.

The statement read in part, “For God knows reason, Lai Mohammed did not participate in any of our campaigns and did not also contribute financially to it. It was the then governorship candidate of our party, the APC, who supported our campaigns all through.

“For the records, all the 24 members of the House of Assembly received financial support from Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq for the purpose of prosecuting the House of Assembly election; so, Lai Mohammed should please stop telling lies to the people.

“Apart from the governorship candidate (Abdulrazaq), the other support was the sum of N500,000 each that we received from the national headquarters of our party, APC. Other than that, it was the governor who funded our expenses, including logistics, souvenirs, posters and other campaign materials. Even so, at no time did the governor go about telling anyone that he funded our campaign.”

The lawmakers said it is laughable that Mohammed could claim to have personally raised money to finance the 2019 general elections in Kwara.
